Abstract: We prove Lech's multiplicity conjecture: Hilbert–Samuel multiplicity cannot decrease under a flat local homomorphism of nonzero Noetherian local rings. The result holds in arbitrary dimension, with no restrictions on the residue fields or characteristics.
