Lemma lem:plateaucov is an identity for the complete divergence-form operator. It does not replace $\partial_{μ} (g A^{μν} \partial_{ν})$ by $g \partial_{μ} (A^{μν} \partial_{ν})$ . The terms in (eq:Vgexpanded) and (eq:Wgexpanded) remain part of the operator.
