The operational interpretation is the first derivative of the vacuum expectation of the smeared Wick-square readout under a compact quadratic source pulse. The readout smearing is real and signed, as is permissible for a linear observable.
This interpretation does not construct a bounded finite-dimensional instrument for the unbounded Wick-square observable. Such an implementation would require its own measurement specification, as emphasized by the selective-map comparison in VII-G CheungVIIG.
