X-B-ii@1#prop:scope
Each of the objects
of X-B has the following properties.
It is a finite sum of elements (or before passage to the quotient) with ; its field degree is one.
The test depends polynomially on , of degree at most two in and one in , and continuously in the smooth background topology at fixed .
No occurs in . The constant and the kernel enter X-B only through the commutator and through the one-contraction check of Section sec:boundary, in which cancels.
Every two-point kernel that occurs is a scalar Green kernel (, , ) applied to a compactly supported smooth source, or as in (iii). Every background slot is evaluated on a classical configuration; no background slot is contracted against another background slot through a kernel.
No functional of or alone (in particular no gravitational action) is formed.
Proof.
(i)–(ii) for : the are the frozen tests of
X-B, Proposition prop:linear, each in ,
with linear in and quadratic in and
linear in through and ; continuity
is the handoff statement. For :
is linear in through the coefficients of (eq:Lone),
and is smooth, so with support in
; continuity is X-B, Theorem thm:retarded. For
and : sums and compositions of the
previous two with replaced by or ; the degree
in of is two. For :
X-B, (eq:defect-class-ref) below is the difference of two
such elements. Field degree one is the statement that each object
is a class of a functional , which has first derivative
and vanishing higher derivatives.
(iii) The tests are defined by (eq:Rone) and the formulas for , none of which contains or . X-B uses in the Wick product and in the one-contraction check; Proposition prop:check below shows that the check is independent of .
(iv) By inspection of Definition def:sheet: the kernels inside , , and are applied to the classical sources and their second-order analogues; is applied to . The background slots of are evaluated on and : two slots of the same kernel are both evaluated classically; neither is integrated against a two-point distribution in the metric variables.
(v) Every object has field degree one in ; a functional of alone would have degree zero.
