For the witness in Section sec:obstruction, the scalar and ghost fields are zero. Linearization is at zero metric fluctuation. The gravitational self source is quadratic in that fluctuation and therefore does not contribute to the linearized mixed response. Thus neither an omitted matter tree nor an unevaluated self-tree can cancel the pairing (eq:Dnonzero).
