Let be open, relatively closed, , and let .

  1. If and extends to , then extends to . Equivalently: if has no extension, then has no extension. No invertibility of is needed.

  2. The converse of (a) fails: there are and without extension such that extends.

  3. If is only assumed smooth on , (a) fails: there are such and an extendable with not extendable.

  4. (Corrected witness transfer.) Let , let be compact, and let , , satisfy and . Put . Then , , and for each fixed there is with for all . Any sequence with these properties excludes an extension of . However, need not hold, so is in general not a normalized failure sequence in the sense of XV-C; a normalized failure sequence for exists by XV-C's failure proposition but is in general a different sequence.

Proof. (a) If extends , then and .

(b) Take , , for and for , which has no extension by XV-B's Proposition prop:nonextendable XVB. Take for , , which is in and flat at . Then for and for , a bounded continuous function on , which extends to as the corresponding function.

(c) Take , as in (b), (extendable), and on . Then is XV-B's nonextendable function on (and on , which does not restore extendability: XV-B's test functions are supported in ).

(d) and . By the Leibniz rule, for , since . If had an extension , then on tests supported in , for some , so for all , a contradiction. For the last assertion, involves derivatives of of order up to on , whose suprema are not bounded uniformly in in general; so the bound is not implied. Existence of a normalized sequence for is XV-C's Proposition prop:failure applied to , which is nonextendable by (a) XVC.
