Suppose has an extension. For the following are equivalent: (i) is jet-detected; (ii) there is an extension with . For a fixed extension a jet-detected relation may have zero defect: in (R5), is jet-detected, , . If is finite, every jet-detected admits extensions , with and .
Proof. (ii)(i). If is not jet-detected, every is flat on and lies in by (R2). Given and a compact , choose , as in (R3) and let be an order of on ; (R3) gives for . As is arbitrary, for all , so by (R1).
(i)(ii). Let extend ; choose and with not flat at , and minimal with . For set , an extension of since . By Lemma lem:deltamult, , an affine function of with nonzero direction; it vanishes for at most one . For any other , , hence by (R1). The example is (R5); the last sentence is (R4) together with the construction of .
