A diagonal basis matrix has its indicated entry equal to one. An off-diagonal matrix has both symmetric entries equal to one. Thus

Second jets are indexed by multi-indices, not by a redundant ordered pair of derivative indices. In particular, a mixed second derivative is one independent jet coordinate.
