For each there are unique coefficients , indexed by and multi-indices , such that

for all smooth symmetric , read as an identity of polynomials in the independent jet coordinates of and . Moreover:

  1. Quadratic homogeneity. Every monomial of the unpolarized has degree exactly in the jet of ; hence for .

  2. Bilinearity and diagonal. is bilinear, and .

  3. Slot symmetry. ; also .

  4. Distribution of derivatives (exact, not only a maximum).

    • : is a linear form in , and only for .

    • : is a linear form in , and only for .

    • : is a constant multiple of , and only for .

In every monomial of the number of derivatives on plus the number on the two slots equals .

  5. Rational coefficients. Each is a linear combination, with rational constant coefficients, of the components of the -jet of the order stated in (4). There is no other -dependence; in particular neither nor occurs.

  6. Agreement with XVI-K. is the polarized source , , of XVI-K, Definition def:a (XVI-J, eq:Q), identically.

Proof. Count, for each monomial of each printed atom, its degree in and its number of derivatives (on and on ), as in the proof of XVI-K, Proposition prop:hess. , have degree and no derivative. is constant; and of (eq:L-C) are sums of products of 's, 's and of total degree and , with no derivative. has degree and exactly one derivative. In , has degree and two derivatives (Leibniz' rule distributes them over the factors), and has degree and two derivatives; so , have degree and two derivatives. Hence has degree , degree (the term included), both with two derivatives, and by (eq:L-J3) every monomial of has degree and exactly two derivatives on . By (eq:L-M2), every monomial of has degree (: ; : ) and exactly one derivative on . has degree and none. Multiplying by , , respectively gives (1) and, for the unpolarized source, the statements of (4) and (5): each summand is linear in the -jet of order , , , with no derivative of of another order, and with , , derivatives on . All printed numerical coefficients are rational () and has entries , which gives rationality. No atom contains or .

A polynomial homogeneous of degree in independent jet coordinates can be written ; its polarization equals . This is bilinear, symmetric under , and returns on ; this proves (2) and (3) (the symmetry is the symmetry of , , in , immediate from (eq:L-J3)–(eq:L-M2) because , are symmetric; the latter is checked by the script). A jet coordinate with stands for ; polarization replaces the pair by , which keeps the derivative orders , of the two factors. So the slot orders of (eq:jet) are the derivative orders of the two -factors of the unpolarized monomials, and (4) follows. The expansion (eq:jet) exists by collecting terms, and is unique because distinct jet coordinates are independent variables. (6): XVI-K, Definition def:a, polarizes by the same rule, with of the same printed formula (eq:L-C); the two definitions coincide.
