The kernel satisfies
More precisely, its possible singular branches arise from:
the bulk diagonal ;
direct null propagation from to ;
together with null propagation, with covectors
pure boundary conormals
This is an upper bound, not an assertion that every listed covector occurs.
Proof. The retarded wave kernel has diagonal conormals and, away from the diagonal, the null propagation relation . Multiplication by is permitted: a wavefront covector of that factor has zero -component, whereas a wavefront covector of the retarded kernel has nonzero -component. Hence opposite covectors cannot sum to zero.
The product theorem yields the direct branches, the boundary sums , and the pure boundary conormals. At , the bulk diagonal does not meet the support of , because is supported strictly in .
Integrating the first-order operator by parts in gives the kernel of . This can produce a , but not a . Finally, moving from onto the -kernel and multiplying by do not enlarge the wavefront set. This proves the assertion.
