A distribution has supported normal order at most along if and only if it has a unique representation

Proof. Suppose has the stated normal order. Define

Continuity of makes a distribution.

For , set

Each is a test on , and

has zero normal jets through order . Consequently,

which is (eq:normal).

Conversely, every insertion is supported on and depends only on its indicated jet. The finite sum therefore has the required normal order. Lemma lem:extraction proves uniqueness.
